It's a great idea! The thought of my tax dollars being used to support someone's drug/alcohol problem is infuriating! I don't mind lending a helping hand (temporarily) when someone is down, but I only want to help with their necessities, not their recreation. The only downside would be the expense of administering the tests.

Drug and alchol testing ought to be mandatory for public assistance elegibility. You bring up a very good point that should be getting much more attention.
I am against government sponsored welfare, but if we are going to do it, we must look at the larger issue rather than adding another layer of bureaucracy to a broken system. We need to find a way to end the multi-generational welfare dependency cycle. I don't claim to have the answer, but I suspect education is a major component.

I absolutely feel they should be required to be tested for drugs. I also feel that only essential living expenses should be paid for and only for a limited time. The expense of administering the program could be paid for by lessening their benefits.

The root of the welfare problem is the entitlement mentality. People think they are entitled to other peoples money and have no moral qualms using the force of government to get it. If government were kept in its limited and proper sphere of function then there would be more than enough private money and opportunities for individuals to avoid a welfare scenario. There must be a change in thinking and a return to proper government. I support responsible drug legalization but I will never support using my tax dollars to subsidize an individuals bad habits and poor decision making.

What a superb idea! Too much of our tax money is wasted on welfare and to think a recipient is under the influence of drugs is preposterous. Being right in the middle of a situation in which this is a crux issue, I am significantly more sensitive to this subject. Steve, please consider bringing this to the new 2013 session. Thank you.
